Description

A terrace of four houses built around 1860, with later alterations. The houses are constructed of brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with timber doorcases, eaves guttering, and a hipped slate roof featuring brick stacks and rooflights.

The front elevation is of three storeys and eight bays. The right return of No. 196 has an entrance. The doorcases to Nos. 198, 200, and 202 feature plain jambs and dentilled flat cornices supported by heavy, grooved brackets. The doors are of four sunk panels, with margin-glazed, segment-headed overlights recessed within panelled pilaster reveals. To the right of the front doors are two-story canted bay windows with moulded and modillioned cornices and four-pane sashes, except for No. 196, which has top-hung lights. Above the doors to Nos. 200 and 202 are narrow four-pane sash windows with segment-arched heads; a similar window over the door to No. 198 is blocked. All second-floor windows are four-pane sashes with segment-arched heads, with the exception of No. 196, which has two one-pane sashes. A painted stone sill band runs across the first-floor windows and the second-floor windows have painted stone sills.

The right return of No. 196 has a tripartite screen with moulded cornices on console brackets; the door has six moulded panels beneath a radial fanlight, deeply recessed in panelled reveals, flanked by narrow sash windows. Ground and first-floor windows on the right return are four-pane sashes with painted stone sills, flat brick arches, and louvred shutters. Second-floor windows have been altered to top-hung and pivoting lights. The interior was not inspected.
