Description

This property comprises two houses at 40 and 42 Marygate, dating to around 1760, with alterations made during the mid-19th century and late 19th century. The construction is primarily brick, with a pantiled roof. The exterior features two horizontal brick bands delineating the storeys. The windows have rubbed brick flat arches. The windows in the two left-hand bays are sash windows without glazing bars, while those in the two right-hand bays are also sash windows. A 20th-century flat-roofed dormer, incorporating three sash windows, is situated above the right-hand bays. The third bay features an 18th-century doorcase with slim pilasters, console brackets, and a cornice hood. The door itself has six raised and fielded panels, with a gothick-patterned overlight. To the left, a mid-19th-century doorcase is supported by brackets with a dentilled cornice and includes an overlight with margin panes, alongside a door with two tall, round-topped panels. The left-hand gable has a coped detail. Chimneys are positioned on the ridge to the right of the left-hand bay and at the far right. The interior has not been inspected. This building possesses group value from its contribution to the streetscape.
