Description

Bedern Chapel, formerly known as St Peter's Chapel, is a chapel of the College of Vicars Choral of York Minster, now used as a store room. It was built in 1252 and altered in the mid-14th century and later, with renovations and re-roofing completed in the late 20th century. The original structure is made of magnesian limestone ashlar and rubble, while the west gable wall has been rebuilt in red brick with limestone quoins. The roof is covered with pantiles.

The exterior features a one-storey, four-bay front facing the street. The entrance is located at the western end, accessed through a 20th-century door set in a chamfered opening with a two-centred head. The windows, which are of two and three lights, are blocked below the transoms and have square latticed glazing above, with diamond-section mullions that have largely been renewed. East of the centre window is a truncated concave niche. All openings have splayed designs and sloping sills.

Inside, the east end contains a long rectangular recess with a flat arch made of chamfered stones, featuring a reset scalloped capital and tapering brackets at the centre and each end. On the north side, the western end has a doorway with square jambs and a chamfered flattened two-centred rere-arch; above it, to the right, is a quarter-round gallery corbel. At the eastern end, there are remains of an aumbry with a chamfered lintel. The south side features a keel-moulded doorway with a two-centred head that is blocked on the outside, and at the western end, there are remains of a blocked second door. The west end has a blocked central doorway to the right of a blocked aumbry in a rebated surround. All window openings inside are also splayed.
