Description
Etty's tomb is a chest tomb located approximately 25 metres south-east of St Olave's Church in York. It commemorates William Etty, who died in 1849. The tomb is constructed of ashlar and red brick and features a rectangular shape on a moulded base, topped with a moulded cornice and a shaped top. The recessed sides are adorned with trefoil-headed ogee-arched panels.
On the south-east side, there is a plaque that reads: "WILLIAM ETTY ROYAL ACADEMICIAN BORN 10 MARCH 1787 DIED 13 NOVEMBER 1849". The north-west side features a longer inscription that highlights Etty's achievements as a Royal Academician and his contributions to the arts, noting his perseverance, kindness, and the affection he inspired in those around him. It also reflects on his character, faith, and devotion to God, concluding with a biblical quote: "Why seek ye the living among the dead" from Luke 24:5.
