Description
The Church of St Nicholas is a Grade I listed building located in Askham Bryan, North Yorkshire. It dates from the late 12th century and has undergone some alterations over the years. The church is constructed of magnesian limestone ashlar and sandstone rubble, topped with a red plain tile roof.
The structure features a continuous nave and chancel, along with a south porch and a north vestry. The west end includes a single round-arched window set in a chamfered surround beneath a hood-mould. At the top, there is a bell-turret supported by a corbel frieze, which holds a single bell-light and is topped with a cross.
The south porch is notable for its three orders of arches, which are decorated with chevron moulding on weathered capitals that feature water-leaf and ram's horn motifs. It also has two orders of nook shafts, with the inner order being plain. The nave and chancel have a two-course moulded plinth and three round-headed windows on each side, all in chamfered surrounds, some of which have been recut, and are topped with recut hood-moulds. On the south side, there is a round-arched priest's doorway.
The east end of the church features a group of three similar windows beneath an oculus window, all set in a chamfered surround with ball moulding, and a recut cross at the apex. The eaves band and ashlar coping adorn the gable ends. Inside, the walls are whitewashed, and there are no notable special features.
