Description
23 and 25 Church Street is a house that now serves as a house and shop, dating from the mid-18th century, with a 19th-century shop front and rendering. The building is constructed of brick, rendered at the front and whitewashed on the left gable end, topped with a pantile roof. The layout consists of three rooms with a lobby entry located to the right of the center, and there is a later rear outshut.
The structure has two storeys and features three first-floor windows. The 19th-century panelled door is set in an architrave and flanked by two-pane sash windows, all within 18th-century flush wooden architraves, and beneath keyed and channelled stucco flat arches. The shop front on the left includes a recessed half-glazed panelled door with a three-light window to the left, both framed by a pilastered surround that has a plain frieze, cornice, and hood. The first-floor windows are two-pane sashes in 18th-century flush wooden architraves with sills.
The building has a dentilled brick eaves cornice and paired wooden brackets supporting the gutter. The left gable features tumbled-in brick and a corniced axial stack. There is also a half-glazed door beneath a segmental arch on the left gable end, with wrought-iron letters "I L" on the gable.
Inside, the building is largely unaltered, showcasing heavy chamfered spine beams, exposed joists, and wide fireplaces on the ground floor, with plaster on the first floors. The interior has not been fully investigated, and the property was empty and unoccupied at the time of the resurvey.
