Description
The cross shaft located on the green at the junction of Greenhill Road, High Street, and Church Street is a medieval structure with a cap added in the late 19th to early 20th century. It is made of limestone ashlar and features a drum pedestal with a square-section base and broach stops leading to an octagonal top. The tall chamfered square-section shaft has a mid panel on the east side that displays a painted relief carving of a shield featuring the Mowbray arms, which includes a lion rampant. The stone cap is of ogee design, and the overall height of the cross shaft is approximately 2 metres. This cross is known locally as the "Mowbray Cross," named after the Mowbrays, who were the medieval Lords of Haxey Manor.
