Description
Number 20 and the adjoining stables are a house and stable located on High Street in Burton Upon Stather. The house likely dates from the 17th to early 18th century and was raised to two storeys and extended at the rear in the late 18th century, featuring 19th-century gables and roof. The stable is from the late 18th to early 19th century, with some minor later alterations.
The house has a brick front, with the first floor, gables, and stack made of brick, while the sides and rear ground floor are constructed from roughly-coursed ironstone rubble. The stable features a brick front and sides, with the rear made of coursed ironstone rubble and brick dressings. Both buildings have pantile roofs.
The house follows a baffle-entry plan and has two storeys with three first-floor windows. There is a plank door to the right of the centre and casement windows. A two-course brick band runs along the first floor, with circular tie-bar ends and casements above. All windows are 20th-century with brick header sills. The house has a cogged brick eaves cornice, brick-coped gables, and an axial stack. The right gable features T Y tie-bar ends.
The adjoining stable is a single storey with an attic and consists of three bays. It has a central stable door, an arched cart entrance to the left with an inserted door and casement, and a small part-glazed and slatted opening to the right. All openings have segmental brick arches. Inside the house, there is a central inglenook fireplace and a pine panelled former saddler's workshop on the ground floor to the right.
