Description
The Brocklesby Memorial Arch is a Grade II listed memorial arch that serves as the entrance to Brocklesby Park. It was built in 1864 and is constructed from limestone ashlar in a classical style. The arch is rectangular in shape and stands approximately 12 metres high, with similar facades on the east and west sides.
The structure features Tuscan pilasters that support a central arch, which is adorned with an archivolt, an enriched scrolled keystone, and carved spandrels. On either side of the arch are pedestals with moulded plinths and cornices, which carry twin Roman Doric pilasters. Between these pilasters is banded rustication, and there are freestanding twin columns with Composite capitals that support an entablature. This entablature includes an inscribed frieze, a modillion cornice, and a blocking course.
On the east side of the arch, there is an inscription that reads: "TO CHARLES ANDERSON WORSLEY 2ND EARL OF YARBOROUGH," while the west side bears the inscription: "BY HIS TENANTS AND FRIENDS." Additionally, there are a pair of cast-iron half-column gate piers within the arch, inscribed with "T Simpson & Co Lincoln AD 1866." The arch is a prominent feature in the landscape.
