Description

Bonby House is a farmhouse dating from the early 19th century, with alterations in the later 19th century. The tie-bar ends are dated 1819. Constructed of local brick, it has a concrete tile roof and is arranged in a T-shaped plan, comprising a two-room central entrance hall and a two-room rear wing. The front elevation is two storeys and three bays, symmetrical in design. A flight of three stone steps leads to a recessed 20th-century door beneath a three-pane overlight, set within an original doorcase featuring a panelled frieze and pairs of narrow, panelled pilasters with reeded brackets supporting a shallow hood. The ground floor has sixteen-pane sashes in flush wooden architraves with sills and stucco cambered arches. The first floor has twelve-pane sashes in flush wooden architraves with sills and lintels at eaves level. Stepped eaves are present, along with a plain wooden eaves board. Stone-coped gables have shaped kneelers, and there are end stacks. The left return features a four-bay rear wing with two recessed six-fielded-panel doors beneath three-pane overlights (the left one is blind), set in wooden architraves with stucco cambered arches; two sixteen-pane ground-floor sashes in flush wooden architraves with similar arches; and a first-floor unequal nine-pane sash and a 20th-century two-light casement with glazing bars, all in matching surrounds. This wing also has a stone-coped gable with shaped kneelers, and dated wrought-iron tie-bar ends to the left gable. The interior contains an open well staircase with a ramped handrail and plain balusters, as well as panelled window shutters and doors in architraves.
