Description

Worlaby House is a house dating from the early to mid-19th century, with later 19th-century additions. It is constructed of yellow brick in Flemish bond, featuring sandstone ashlar dressings and a porch, topped with a concrete tile roof. The building has an L-shaped plan, comprising a two-room central entrance hall on the south front, a three-room wing to the rear right, and a single-room extension to the left. It stands two storeys high and has three bays, with a symmetrical façade and a single-storey extension to the left.

The house has a rendered plinth and a flight of six stone steps leading to a projecting porch supported by Ionic columns, which hold up a plain entablature and a flat hood adorned with an ornate wrought-iron balcony. Flanking the recessed panelled door, which has an overlight with margin lights, are Ionic pilasters. The windows on the ground floor are unequal 15-pane recessed sashes set in architraves, with recessed ashlar panels below and cambered wedge lintels designed to imitate rubbed brick. The left extension features a similar window topped by a coped embattled parapet. On the first floor, there are 12-pane sashes with sills and similar lintels, along with a central French window leading to the balcony, also with margin lights. The eaves cornice is wooden, and the roof is hipped with end stacks.

The right return of the house forms the garden front and consists of five bays, featuring a recessed three-bay central section with a later ground-floor canted brick bay. The windows here are 12-pane sashes with sills and incised ashlar lintels similar to those on the front. Inside, the entrance hall has a ribbed cornice with paterae and a round-arched opening leading to the stair hall. The open well staircase features a wreathed handrail, fluted balusters, and a clustered newel. The main rooms throughout the house have moulded friezes and cornices, with panelled window shutters and doors in architraves.
