Description
The pump house, located approximately 10 metres north of High Wood Farmhouse, is a well-head structure built around 1830 for J G S Smith. It was later converted to a water tank in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of yellow-grey brick and features a slate roof. It has an octagonal shape and is a tall single storey. Each side, except the west, has round-arched recessed panels, some of which have been blocked with later brickwork. There is a blocked segmental-headed opening on the north side and small segmental-headed hatches on the east and west sides. Vertical cast-iron ribs are bolted to each side, and the eaves cornice is stepped and dentilled. Originally, the pump house housed a horse pump above a deep well, but it was later converted to a water tank that was fed by a wind pump located over a mile away in the village. The thickened lower walls are supported by the iron ribs, which are tied by iron bars to a central pillar. The pump house is no longer in use for domestic water supply.
