Description
Odd Fellows Hall is a building dating from 1864, constructed in an Italian Renaissance palazzo style. It is built of red brick with yellow-grey brick and ashlar dressings, and has a Welsh slate roof. The building is two storeys and consists of five bays by three bays. The ground floor is rusticated with yellow-grey brick banding, while the first floor has bays articulated by yellow-grey brick pilasters. The ground floor includes double-panelled doors beneath segment-headed overlights to the far left and central bay, with a similar door and overlight to the right bay. Otherwise, the windows are four-pane, segment-headed sashes. All openings are set within cambered brick arches. A moulded blue and red brick cornice runs along the top of the ground floor. The first floor has a central, eight-pane semi-circular headed full-length window, flanked by two sets of paired, semi-circular headed sashes on either side. The windows below are set within grey brick arches with ashlar keyblocks on corbelled ashlar imposts. Side windows have bracketed ashlar sills. A stepped and dentilled red and blue brick cornice with bracketed overhanging eaves leads to a hipped roof. There are two brick stacks on the side walls. The left return elevation facing Queen Street has a similar design, with a central round-headed doorcase flanked by segment-headed sashes on the ground floor, and three sets of paired windows above. The building is listed for its historic importance as a grand and architecturally pretentious hall representing the Odd Fellows, a prominent working men's association and friendly society, particularly in the 19th century.
