Description
Thompson's Mill is an early 19th-century windmill tower located on the south side of Rectory Street in Epworth. The structure is built of tarred red brick and features a tapered round tower with four storeys. The ground floor has board doors on the north and south sides, with single windows on the east and west. The first floor has four windows, while the two upper floors each have two windows on the north and south sides. All openings are set beneath segmental brick arches; the ground-floor windows have iron glazing bars, while the others have fragmentary wood frames, all with sandstone sills. The mill has a stepped and cogged brick eaves cornice and an iron kerb, topped by a low 20th-century roof. It retains most of its original internal machinery and has a later external iron wheel for mechanical belt drive located on the east side at first-floor level. The interior was not inspected. Thompson's Mill is one of only three tower mills in South Humberside that still have most of their internal machinery. At the time of the resurvey, the mill was disused and in disrepair.
