Description

The Market Cross in Epworth has medieval origins and was reset in 1806. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a circular base with four steps that support a square pedestal. The pedestal has a plinth, panelled sides, and a stepped cap that contains a leaded socket and an iron spike for a former cross shaft. There is a small 20th-century plaque on the pedestal noting that John Wesley preached from these steps on many occasions. An illustration from around 1858 shows the cross with a tall shaft.
