Description

The Humberston War Memorial, built in 1919, commemorates those lost in the First World War, with later additions for the Second World War. It is constructed of Norwegian granite and stands within the churchyard of the Church of St Peter, a building of group value.

The memorial is a Celtic wheel-head cross set upon a trapezoidal plinth, a single-step base, and a tall concrete pedestal. The arms of the cross are sculpted with Celtic fretwork. Marble shields are set into the pedestal, bearing inscriptions. The west side features lines from Laurence Binyon's poem 'For The Fallen', the east side lines from Rupert Brooke's 'The Dead', and the north and south sides feature biblical text.

The west face of the plinth contains the First World War dedication, which remembers the parishioners of Humberston who died between 1914 and 1919, along with the names of three men. A shield on the pedestal contains a quote from 'For The Fallen'. On the east side, the plinth acknowledges the monument's construction by the parishioners alongside the parents and friends of the departed. A shield on the pedestal includes lines from a poem. The remaining names of five men who died in the First World War are inscribed on the base of the memorial’s north and south sides, while the plinth is inscribed with the dates 1939-1945 and the names of nine local men who died in the Second World War. The north shield displays a passage from Romans, and the south shield from Ephesians.

The memorial is surrounded by a small enclosure defined by a Norwegian granite kerb set on a concrete foundation, which is considered an integral part of the design. Later additions, consisting of two incense burners, are not included in the listing.
