Description
The railings to the Council House along the Cambridge Street elevation were constructed between 1903 and 1904 by architect Herbert C. Scaping from Grimsby, with engineering by Egbert Rushton and building by Henry Marrows, for the Cleethorpes and Thrunscoe Urban District Council. The structure features ashlar piers and a dwarf wall topped with wrought-iron railings. It consists of seven bays, including a sinuous four-bay section on the left that flanks the main entrance to the Council House, and a straight three-bay section on the right that flanks a gateway. The square-section piers have an egg-and-dart cornice, a moulded cornice, and domed tops. The round-topped dwarf wall is ramped up in three places. The plain railings have pointed finials, with the three left sections each containing two intermediate panels supported by rear buttresses. These panels feature scrollwork and ornate tops that reflect a similar Arts and Crafts style to the balustrade of the Council House staircase. The railings are currently undergoing renovation, and the gates, previously described as also in an ornate Arts and Crafts style, were missing at the time of the last survey.
