Description
The Cleethorpes War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure designed by Wilfrid Bond of Grantham, unveiled in 1920 to honor those who fell in the First World War.
This limestone memorial features an octagonal pillar set on an octagonal base, resting on a three-stepped octagonal platform, and is topped with a carved stone crucifix. It stands approximately 6 meters tall and 1.8 meters wide.
Nearby, on the east elevation of the Church of St Peter, there is an accompanying plaque with gold lettering that reads: ‘THE CHURCHYARD CROSS WAS ERECTED AND A PEAL OF BELLS / PUT IN THE CHURCHTOWER TO COMMEMORATE THE BRAVE / MEN WHO DIED FOR US IN THE GREAT WAR A.D. 1914 – 1918 / AND WHOSE SACRIFICE SHOULD NEVER BE FORGOTTEN / [99 NAMES] / GRANT THEM LORD ETERNAL REST’.
The memorial is located within a segmental forecourt about 6 meters east of the Church of St Peter, which was built in 1864 by James Fowler and is also listed at Grade II, and is situated to the west side of St Peter’s Avenue.
