Description

The Former Western Synagogue, also known as Linden House, is a synagogue built in 1902 by BS Jacobs. It is constructed of red brick with terracotta dressings and features a slate roof. The building has a plinth, moulded eaves, and a coped west gable that includes an arched corbel table and an eaves cornice. The western entrance has a central single-storey porch with two doorways, each featuring round-headed terracotta arches supported by columns. Above the porch is a shallow gable that frames an open book with a Hebrew inscription, and in the main gable above, there is a 5-light window with round-headed lights, terracotta shafts, and moulded hoods. Above this window, there is a blind circular opening containing a Star of David. On either side of the entrance, there are two-storey canted projections with hipped roofs, each featuring a 3-light round-headed lancet window with terracotta shafts and arches, flanked by single lancets in the corners. Further along, there are additional 3-light lancets, one of which on the right has been altered. Below these windows is a pair of windows with a continuous sill band, and the plain returns have five pairs of round-headed windows. The interior retains all its original fittings, including wooden seating and side galleries supported on iron columns.
