Description

Weighton Lock is a lock and sluice built in 1773, as noted on the datestone, which also mentions John Grundy as the engineer, Samuel Allen or Allam as the surveyor, John Smith as the carpenter, and Mr. Jefferson as the mason. The structure was repaired in 1826 by Joseph Whitehead and again between 1855 and 1856. It is constructed of ashlar and timber, featuring a lock to the east with a humpbacked bridge and a sluice to the west. The lock measures approximately 3 metres in width and 30 metres in total length, equipped with two pairs of gates and original manual winching gear. The bridge has a four-course parapet, while the sluice has a semicircular pier that divides round arches over the waterways, each originally about 5 metres wide with draw doors to the north and pointing doors to the south. The draw doors have recently been replaced by roller gates. The flat three-course parapet of the sluice bears a plaque detailing the building information on the south side. This lock and sluice manage the outfall of the Market Weighton Canal into the River Humber. An Act of Parliament for the Market Weighton Drainage and Navigation was passed in May 1772, and the project was engineered by John Grundy, with construction taking place between 1772 and 1783.
