Description

The cross-base located to the south of the Church of All Saints is likely from the late medieval period and has been re-cut to serve as a stone seat. It is made of gritstone and takes the form of a cubical block with a central socket that has been expanded on one side to create the seat. This stone was originally situated at the top of Garrowby Hill and is referred to as King Harold's Chair due to a local legend that claims he sat in it to admire the view after the battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066.
