Description
Painsthorpe Hall is a house built around 1815 for Admiral Sir Charles Richardson. It is constructed of red-grey brick and has a slate roof with an irregular plan. The building has two storeys and three bays, with the left bay slightly projecting under a separate hip. The central entrance features a six-panel door with an overlight that has glazing bars. To the right of the door is a 12-pane sash window with a sill, and to the left is a 20th-century garden door with margin-pane glazing, all set beneath flat gauged brick arches. On the first floor, there are three unequal 9-pane sash windows with sills, also under flat gauged brick arches. The eaves are supported by paired brackets, and the roof is hipped with axial stacks. Inside, the house retains a good original interior, including a cut string staircase with turned balusters and a slender wreathed handrail.
