Description

This is a house, dating back to approximately 1680, with an early 18th-century rear wing. The roof pitch was lowered, and stacks reduced in the late 19th century. It is constructed of red brick with a flat tile roof, and has a plinth. The house has two storeys and a seven-window front, featuring a central, two-storey projecting gabled porch. The front door is a 20th-century round-headed double-leaf door with glazing bars, set within a keyed round-headed arch on stone imposts. Heart-shaped piercings, now glazed, are in the ground-floor side walls of the porch. The windows are sashes, with sills and glazing bars, except for the 20th-century projecting garage entrance in bay seven and a tripartite sash in bay one and five. All windows are under segmental brick arches. The first floor has matching windows. An axial stack incorporates grouped flues with bands marking the former lead flashings. Gable elevations show blocked windows at ground, first, and attic levels, the attic window now truncated due to the lowered roof pitch. Inside, a large inglenook fireplace has an elliptical arch with continuously chamfered jambs. A fine, though somewhat reduced, closed-string staircase from about 1700 features vase balusters, square newels with pendants, and a heavy moulded handrail. It is thought this dates from the same period as the rear wing, which may have replaced a previous rear stair tower. The rear wing contains a large, early 18th-century inglenook fireplace with two bread ovens.
