Description

The Old Rectory Garden contains a boundary wall with a Norman gateway, located approximately 30 metres in length along the Main Street in Catwick. The arched gateway dates back to around the 11th century, but was re-erected in 1862-63. The garden wall itself is constructed of red brick and stands over 2 metres high, topped with terracotta coping. The gateway features stone jambs from the former south doorway of the medieval parish church of St Michael. These jambs include fragmentary plain circular stone shafts and cushion capitals. The upper segmental arch is made of 19th-century brick. This gateway represents an important surviving fragment from the earlier church of St Michael.
