Description
Cottam House is a farmhouse built in the late 18th century, with later additions and alterations. It features a pinkish-brown brick front facade in Flemish bond, complemented by red brick and ashlar dressings, and has pantile roofs. The building is three storeys tall and consists of five bays, with two-storey, single-bay ranges on either side. The layout is a double-range plan with a central hallway.
The central entrance has a part-glazed door with an overlight, framed by a pilastered doorcase. The ground and first floors have 4-pane sash windows, except for the right range and the first floor of the left range, which have casement windows. The third floor features 6-pane sash windows. All windows are set under flat arches made of red rubbed brick and have ashlar sills. The main block has a wooden modillion eaves cornice, while the ranges display stepped eaves of red brick. Some gable ends have shaped kneelers and ashlar copings, with end stacks that include cornices.
Inside, the front rooms have shutters, and there are some 6-fielded-panel doors. The staircase is a rod-on-vase dogleg design with square knops, a wreathed and ramped handrail, and two balusters per tread.
