Description
Nos 43 and 45 on Cave Road are a pair of mid-19th century houses that have undergone some 20th century alterations. They are constructed of painted concrete and feature a roof that is partly covered with concrete tiles and partly with Welsh slate. The buildings are two storeys high, plus attics, with each house having two bays. No 45 includes a two-storey, two-bay addition on the right that is not of special interest.
The facades of the houses are mirrored, with the outer bays recessed and the inner bays gabled. Each house has a plank door in the outer bay and a three-light casement window with latticed glazing in the inner bay. Above each bay, there is a similar two-light window, and above the central bays, there are small single-light lattice-glazed windows. All openings feature moulded hood moulds, and the windows have projecting sills. The central gables have plain barge boards with ridge finials, while the eaves are overhanging elsewhere. No 43 has a roof covered with concrete tiles, while No 45 has a slate roof. A central concrete stack is located between the two houses. These properties are listed for their historical significance as early examples of concrete housing.
