Description
The Church of St Mary and St Joseph, built in 1803, is a significant structure located on Grape Lane. It was constructed during the ministry of Father Joseph Swinburne, who relocated the Catholic Chapel from Nuthill, where it had been established by the Robinson family. The church is made of brown brick and features a pantiled roof. Each side of the building has three lunette-headed windows, which originally had glazing that was replaced in 1892 with pre-Raphaelite style stained glass.
Inside, the altar is set within a frescoed apse that includes contemporary architraves and pilasters. At the opposite end of the church, there is a similar apse that contains a gallery with a carved and panelled front.
