Description
The Church of St. Helen is a church with origins dating back to the 12th century, which was rebuilt by J.B. and W. Atkinson in 1865. It is designed in an ornate Norman style and constructed from sandstone ashlar with limestone dressings. The building features a 5-bay nave that includes a north porch and a west bellcote, along with a 2-bay chancel.
The nave has a chamfered plinth and round-headed windows that are supported by nook-shafts, adorned with scallop capitals and chevron ornamentation. The north door, rebuilt in the 12th century style, consists of three orders with nook shafts, a deep roll-moulding in the center order, and chevron decoration in the outer order. A corbel table runs along the nave, incorporating original corbels that are carved into the shapes of beast and human heads.
The north porch features a doorway with nook shafts and capitals, two of which are original, supporting a round arch made up of three orders that are decorated with arcading, beak head motifs, and chevron ornament. The chancel includes a round-headed window with nook-shafts and roll-moulding at the head, as well as a similar round-headed priests' door located in a projecting porch that has a corbelled-in roof. Inside the church, there is a wall monument with a black-letter inscription dedicated to Thomas Wood, who died in 1583.
