Description
65 and 66 Southgate is a house that has been converted into two dwellings. It dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century and was remodeled in the mid-19th century and late 20th century. The building is constructed of cobbles with some brick, rendered and colorwashed on the front and end elevations, and features a pantiled roof. It has a lobby entry plan and is two stories high with three bays.
The original balanced elevation includes a six-panel door with an oblong fanlight featuring glazing bars, set in a pilastered doorcase with ellipses on the dosserets, topped by a projecting cornice at the center (No 65). To the right (No 66), there is a four-panel door in a simpler pilastered doorcase. A 16-pane early 19th-century bow window is located to the right, while later 20th-century bow windows with glazing bars are found elsewhere.
On the first floor, there are tripartite sliding sashes with glazing bars and sills. The raised coped gables and rebuilt axial stack are notable features. The rear elevation has a sliding sash with glazing bars on the left and a round-headed window with glazing bars and radial glazing on the right.
