Description
A group of six tombstones from the early to mid-18th century has been reset to form a path along the south side of the south aisle of the Church of St Mary Magdalene. Made of ashlar, the tombstones are located south of the second bay of the church aisle. The first tombstone commemorates John Wressel, who died in 1711, with verses and additional inscriptions for Nicholas Wressel (1718) and Mary Empson (1790). South of the third bay are three more tombstones: one for Elizabeth, the wife of John Thompson, and their four children, from 1735, featuring relief carvings of cherub's heads above the inscription; another for Joshua Dickens, who died in 1707, with an inscription for his wife Sarah (1714); and a third for George Dunn Younger, who passed away in 1748, which includes a verse. South of the fourth bay, the fifth tombstone is dedicated to Ann, the wife of John Lightfoot, and their daughter Ann, from 1738, with an inscription beneath an incised segmental arch. The sixth tombstone honors Joseph Whitehead, who died in 1730, with an additional inscription for his father Joseph (1736), situated beneath an incised segmental arch adorned with scrolled decoration.
