Description
The lighthouse on the bank of the River Ouse, likely built in the late 19th century for Aire and Calder Navigation, features a concrete base topped with an ashlar cornice. The tower, which is either timber- or metal-framed, is covered with felted vertical wooden boards and has iron railings and a balcony with timber decking. It has a circular plan and stands five stories tall, divided into three stages. The bottom stage is rusticated and includes a plinth, steps leading to a north entrance with a recessed panelled door set in a chamfered architrave, a plain board door to the south, and a moulded ashlar cornice. Above this, the tapered tower has sets of three small stairlights on the south and west sides. The balcony is supported by plain brackets and features plain railings. The top stage has a wide two-light window on the north side beneath a cornice and a ribbed dome with a small cylindrical ventilator topped with a conical cap. The interior has not been inspected. This lighthouse is a local landmark and is the only lighthouse on the Ouse-Trent-Humber river system upstream of the estuary mouth.
