Description
The forecourt piers to Whitgift Hall are a pair of early 18th-century structures located on the south side of Twin Rivers Main Street in Whitgift. They are made of red brick with scored joints and feature limestone ashlar dressings and finials. The square-section piers are positioned approximately 25 metres apart, flanking the north forecourt of Whitgift Hall. Each pier has a moulded plinth, a corniced band, a moulded cornice, and a flat cap with a square pedestal. The west pier supports a tall fluted urn with a boldly gadrooned base and cap, while the urn on the east pier was broken off at the time of the last survey in April 1987 and is lying nearby. Both piers are adorned with single ornate carved scrolled limestone brackets that connect to later adjoining walls. The use of similar materials suggests that the piers may have been built around the same time as the wing walls added to Whitgift Hall during the late 18th to early 19th century remodelling for the Stovin and Coulman families.
