Description
The Folly is a mid-19th century structure located on the south side of Newbegin in Hornsea. It is constructed entirely of rusticated overfired brick wasters and features a circular tower divided into five stages by projecting brick string-courses. The ground floor includes a pointed door framed in projecting brick and a similar pointed window, which is now blocked. The first and second floors have lancet windows, while the third floor boasts a larger pointed window and an oculus, all with projecting brick surrounds. A stepped brick cornice leads to a crenellated parapet. Additionally, at the second and third floor levels, there are various diamond-shaped blank openings that contain bottle-bases arranged to create a pattern. The structure is said to have been built by a man from Hornsea, who was in business in Hull, to provide his family with a view of his anticipated return.
