Description
Nos 54 and 56 Toll Gavel is a late 17th-century building that has undergone some alterations. It stands two storeys high with an attic that features a skylight. The exterior is finished in lined and painted stucco, accented by rusticated quoins and topped with an old tiled roof. The building has moulded wood eaves and three sash windows with moulded architraves and glazing bars. The ground floor includes two shop fronts with wooden cases that have pilasters and a continuous entablature. On the first floor of No 56, there is a section of tongue and groove boarding on the south wall of the rear room, which is painted to mimic walnut fielded panelling. At the back, there is a one-storey extension that contains a two-seater lavatory, as well as a two-storey block made of brick with a pantiled roof. This rear block has sliding sashes with glazing bars on the ground floor and a continuous industrial window with glazing bars on the first floor.
