Description
The Church of St John is a parish church built in 1873 by Lord Grimthorpe. It is constructed from coursed rubble stone with ashlar dressings and has plain tile roofs. The church features raised coped gables with kneelers and a cross finial. The west end is designed with a square bell turret that has moulded round arched bell openings on each face and a pyramidal hipped roof. The west front includes a central pointed arched doorway with a gable above, flanked by single lancet windows and a taller central lancet. Each side of the nave section has three tall lancets, and there is a buttress separating the chancel, which has two similar lancets. To the west, there is a projecting gabled organ chamber. The east end features four lancet windows, with the central two being taller, and above them is a small mandala-shaped window.
Inside, the church has plain brick walls and deeply recessed windows with roll-moulded surrounds and chamfered stone lintels. The pointed wooden chancel arch is supported by ashlar wall columns, and the chancel includes a single pointed ashlar arch leading to the organ chamber. The roof is simple with collars, and there is a circular stone pulpit with carved decorative panels. The church also contains wooden pews and an altar rail with Gothic tracery, as well as Minton encaustic tiles.
