Description
Burshill House is a house with a core dating back to the mid-18th century, significantly enlarged and remodelled around 1830. It is constructed of red brick in an English garden wall bond, with a graduated slate roof. The house has a double-range plan with a central direct entry and a rear wing, with lower wings extending to the right and left of the front elevation. The symmetrical front elevation is arranged over two storeys and three bays. The front entrance features a six-panel door surmounted by a fanlight with radial glazing, set within a doorcase with a dentil-detailed open pediment resting on fluted consoles. The ground floor has four-pane sash windows with sills, each beneath a cambered wedge lintel. The first floor contains three similar, smaller four-pane sashes. Chimneys are located at the ends of the main range, and axially to the rear wing. The gables have tumbled-in brickwork. The lower wings contain a six-panel door under a rectangular opening on the left, and a blocked opening on the right. Coped parapets cap the building. The interior, largely unaltered from around 1830, is notable for a cut-string staircase with scrolled tread-ends, fluted balusters, and a slender handrail, marble fireplaces with pilasters and scrolled brackets to mantel shelves, six-panel doors with panelled reveals and soffits within fluted architraves, and alcoves framed by fluted architraves. These details share similarities with those found in Lane House and Barff House within the same parish.
