Description
Candle Factory Court is an industrial building constructed in 1853 for James and George Wilson. It is made of brick with stone dressings and has slate roofs. The structure is three storeys high and consists of five by eight bays, with later extensions added. A central tower is flanked by two gabled bays on either side, with the right bay being recessed. The building features first and second floor sill bands and a top frieze. The windows have lintels and small-panel casements, with round-headed recesses between the first and second, and third and fourth bays. The tower includes triple round-headed lights and a clock face, along with deep eaves and a pyramidal roof. The right return of the building has similar architectural details, with the fifth bay projecting under a gable, and the sixth to eighth bays being two storeys high and gabled. Some windows are sashed with glazing bars, and there is a 20th-century porch. This building is part of a planned village for Price's Patent Candle Company, which is one of the earliest examples of a model industrial village.
