Description
South Lodge with attached gates and gate piers is a lodge built in the late 19th century for the Ismay Estate. It is constructed from tooled ashlar sandstone and features a shaped Welsh slate roof. The building has an L-shaped plan with the entrance located in the left wing, set behind a double gate, and a side gate adjacent to the lodge. It is one storey high with an attic and has a two-bay front and a left return.
The lodge has a chamfered plinth beneath two two-light mullioned windows, which have two-pane sashes with diagonal glazing bars and are topped with linked hoodmoulds that have ornate stops. A half-dormer on the right side features a similar window under a gable that includes a foiled panel, shaped kneelers, and moulded gable copings. The end gables also have similar copings, and there is a central ridge stack with four flues rising from a deeply offset plinth.
On the left return, which faces the drive, there is a triangular-headed door under a hoodmould that is stepped over a blind shield. To the right, there are three-light windows, and above them, there are two-light windows styled like the others.
The gate piers consist of plinths and monolithic shafts that incorporate front buttresses beneath carved Liver Birds, with cornices that feature ball finials. The iron gates have twisted bars and decorative scrollwork. The Ismay family, known for their shipbuilding, purchased the Dawpool Estate in 1877 and built the main house, which has since been demolished. This lodge served as the principal entrance to that estate and is included for its group value.
