Description

Thurstaston War Memorial is a First World War memorial that includes additions for the Second World War. It is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Bartholomew and is made of pink-coloured granite and concrete.

The memorial features a granite obelisk with a relief-carved wreath tied with ribbons at the base of its north-west face. The obelisk is set on a four-sided, pedimented plinth with a moulded cornice, which sits atop a pedestal mounted on a two-stepped chamfered base, all resting on a stone slab. The entire structure is placed on a square concrete dais that has a recessed, diamond-set feature, bordered by narrow kerb stones.

The north-west pediment bears the First World War dedication, which reads: IN/ LOVING MEMORY OF/ THOSE WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914-1918. Below this, a relief-carved scroll on the pedestal lists six names and includes the phrase: "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." The inscription also notes the awarding of a Military Medal and a Victoria Cross. The south-west pediment features the Second World War dedication, which states: AND/ THOSE WHO FELL IN THE/ SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945. The names of 13 individuals who fell during this conflict are inscribed on the south-west face of the pedestal. All lettering is incised and highlighted in black paint.
