Description

Irby Farmhouse is a farmhouse, dating in part to 1612 with further development in the 18th century. It is located on Thingwall Road, Wirral. The building is constructed of stone with some brick, and has a slate roof. It is two storeys with an attic, and originally comprised three bays, with a two-storey rear wing.

The front of the farmhouse has a prominent stone base with two bands and quoins. The windows have flat brick arches with stone keys and casements. A window in the first bay of the ground floor has been blocked and replaced with a three-light casement. A central hipped dormer window is present on the roof. A late 20th-century stone gabled porch has been added. Windows at the returns and in the rear wing are mostly two-light ovolo-mullioned windows, some without mullions; two have been converted into entrances. Brick gable-end stacks project from the attic and are corbelled. Date stones are present: one on the right return reads “BB EB AD/1612/RB EF” (referring to the Ball family), and another on the entrance facade reads “GBE/1731”.
