Description

A pair of houses dating to the 1850s, built as part of a planned village for the Price’s Patent Candle Company, and considered one of the earliest examples of a model industrial village. The houses are constructed of brick with stucco dressings, topped by a hipped slate roof. They are two storeys and four bays, with the end bays projecting forward. A sill band runs along the first floor, and the top parapet has been altered. There is a tall, narrow, round-headed recess between the central bays. The windows have architraves and sashed glazing bars, while the end bays feature canted bay windows with angle pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. Two round-headed dormer windows contain casements. The stacks to the front and rear of the ridge have round-headed recesses and caps. The returns have porches with first-floor additions from the 20th century, featuring flat pilasters, entablatures, round-headed entrances with four-panel doors and round-headed windows to the returns. Four lateral stacks are also present.
