Description

The former school and master’s house, now a community centre, was built around 1866-8 by Kirk and Sons. It is constructed of rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings, and has slate roofs with tile cresting. The building is one storey in height, with five bays; the first bay rises to two storeys and both the first and fifth bays are gabled, featuring coped gables with iron finials. The central bay has a window of three cusped lights, set under a relieving arch and beneath a gablet. The flanking bays each have a single cusped light. A projecting porch wing has return gables. The first bay’s ground floor features a window of two lights with shouldered lintels under a relieving arch, while the first floor has a window of two pointed lights with a colonette and an ashlar tympanum. The fifth bay has a window of three cusped lights under a relieving arch. The right return of the porch features an entrance door with strap hinges. The first bay has an entrance with a shouldered lintel, and the gable end to the fourth bay contains a bell cote. The left return has a lateral stack, and the right return comprises two bays with a gablet to the first bay.
