Description
The Queens Hotel is a large hotel built in 1866 and subsequently enlarged to the rear. It is constructed from rock-faced sandstone with ashlar dressings and has a hipped slate roof concealed behind a parapet. The building is of Renaissance style, forming a large, irregular U-plan on a corner site, with a main range running parallel to the Promenade and extensive wings added to the rear.
The main facade is three storeys high, likely with a concealed attic, and features a four-window range. Architectural details include a plinth, quoins, sill bands to the upper floors, a deep two-course frieze with zigzag enrichment, a modillioned cornice, and a balustraded parapet with urns which extends around to Bank Square. The ground floor has a round-headed doorway, accessed by three steps and protected by a painted porch with Corinthian columns and a mutuled pediment. A segmental bay window is situated to the left of the doorway, with pilasters, a frieze, a modillioned cornice with a blocking course, and square-headed sash windows. Other front windows are round-headed, matching the style, with the outer bays featuring two-storey canted bay windows, topped with modillioned cornices and balustraded parapets. The two windows between the canted bays at the first floor have pedimented architraves, while the four windows at the second floor have simpler round-headed architraves. A corniced chimney is visible in the centre of the range.
The original three-window return facade to Bank Square has a central doorway with a pedimented architrave, a two-storey canted bay window to the left similar to those on the front, but with square-headed sashes. A sash window to the right has a segmental-pedimented architrave, with two square-headed sashes at the first floor with corniced architraves, and round-headed sashes on the second floor. An eight-window wing has been added to the rear.
The interior was not inspected at the time of listing. The hotel represents a relatively unaltered example of a mid-19th century seaside hotel.
