Description

The Former Victoria Baths, located on the Promenade in Southport, is a public baths building that has been repurposed as a sports club, night club, and public house. It opened in 1839 and was remodeled around 1870, with further alterations made since then. The structure is built of sandstone ashlar, featuring roofs made of slate, corrugated sheet, and glass, and is designed in a French Classical style.

The building has a large, irregular rectangular plan, with the entrance located on the west side. The exterior consists of a two-storey, three-window entrance block that is flanked by single-storey, six-bay side wings. The entrance block, remodeled around 1870, showcases banded corner pilasters, a cornice, a parapet, and a two-stage pavilion roof. It features two round-headed doorways with paired Roman Doric columns and a double pedimented entablature, with one round-headed window positioned between them. On the first floor, the arrangement is reversed, with a central window framed by paired columns and a segmental pediment, flanked by plain windows with paired pilasters above the outer ground-floor columns.

The pavilion roof is elevated at the center, featuring a bull's-eye window at the front, although both this and the lower side roofs no longer have their original ornamental iron cresting. The side wings include round-headed openings separated by paired pilasters. The right-hand return facing Nevill Street has three bays in a similar style, with a Classical entrance at the center. The interior has been altered and remodeled, including the addition of a 20th-century swimming pool.
