Description

The Scarisbrick Hotel, located at number 239 on Lord Street in Southport, is a hotel with shops on the ground floor and an attached verandah. It was built between 1890 and 1891 by J.E. Sanders. The building features small red brick in Flemish bond with stone dressings that are painted white, and while the roof is concealed, it is likely slate. The hotel is designed in an eclectic style and has a large rectangular plan situated on a corner site, positioned at right angles to the street.

The exterior consists of five storeys plus a turret and has a four-window range. The ground floor includes the hotel entrance in the third bay, with 20th-century shop fronts in the other bays. The upper floors are slightly set back except for the third bay, which features sill bands, a simple balustraded parapet, and an octagonal turret above it. The first bay has three-storey bay windows, while the second and fourth bays have two-storey bay windows, all with rounded corners and four sashed lights on each level. The third bay has coupled 1/1 sashes on each floor, with the third-floor window featuring a stepped hoodmould. The other windows on the third and fourth floors consist of two lights, with the fourth-floor windows having altered glazing. The turret includes a one-light window on each side, an embattled parapet, and a flagstaff.

The attached verandah has four bays, with the third bay forming a gabled entrance to the hotel. It features cast-iron columns with geometrical brackets, a pierced frieze with shields, and openwork decoration in the gable that includes the lettering "SCARISBRICK HOTEL." The verandah has a glazed roof that is otherwise mono-pitched.

The hotel forms a group with the buildings at Nos. 221-233 to the left and Nos. 245-251 to the right, and the verandah is part of the series that characterizes this street. The interior has not been inspected.
