Description

Numbers 245, 249, and 251 on Lord Street in Southport are a shop with flats above, built in 1892 and altered later, designed by E.W. Johnson. The building features red brick with white painted stone dressings and a slate roof, showcasing a Renaissance style.

It has a rectangular plan oriented at right angles to the street and stands three storeys tall with a symmetrical two-window range. The ground floor has been altered, while the upper floors are adorned with three pilasters that end in pinnacles, along with various intermediate pilaster strips. These elements are crossed by three string courses and multiple bands of painted stone. Each bay features a tall shaped gable made of painted stone at the center, embellished with strapwork.

On the first floor, there are two canted stone oriels with five transomed lights, each topped with parapets and pedimented gablets. The second floor contains two pairs of wooden cross-windows set under keyed elliptical arches, also with strapwork enrichment. The left pair has honeycomb glazing in the upper lights, while the other windows have altered glazing. The attics feature wooden transomed three-light windows.

The attached verandah consists of two wide bays supported by slender cast-iron columns with crocket caps, pierced brackets leading to a slender beam, a 20th-century fascia around the edge, and a single-pitched glazed roof.

This building forms a group with Nos. 235-241 on the left and No. 253 (National Westminster Bank) on the right, and the verandah contributes to the distinctive character of this street.
