Description
Wood Hall is a house dating from the late 17th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and has a stone slate roof. The front facade is likely from the 18th century and features a stone base and quoins, as well as a cornice. The windows have wedge lintels and are sashed with glazing bars. The central entrance is adorned with an architrave, a pulvinated frieze, and a consoled pediment; the door has two lower fielded panels and a glazed upper section. Above the entrance, there is a stone with royal arms and the initials "IR," possibly referring to James II, which is likely a re-used element. The house has four gable-end stacks, and the rear displays varied fenestration.
Inside, there are some chamfered beams with stepped stops and several six-panel doors with H-hinges featuring short straps. To the north of the right-hand angle of the front facade, there is a stone wall approximately 50 meters long. Wood Hall is associated with the recusant Molyneux family and is reported to have been used for Catholic worship, with a possible priest hole next to the chimney breast. It is also believed that James II stayed at the house.
