MELLING BREWERY LANE (west side)

Wood Hall and wall to north of front garden 11.10.68 II House. Late C17 with later alterations. Brick with stone dressings, stone slate roof. Front facade probably C18. Stone base and quoins, cornice. Windows have wedge lintels and are sashed with glazing bars. Central entrance with architrave, pulvinated frieze and consoled pediment; door has 2 lower fielded panels and glazed upper part. Stone with royal arms and "IR" (possibly James II) above, probably re-used. 4 gable-end stacks. Rear has varied fenestration. Interior has some chamfered beams with stepped stops and some 6-panel doors with H-hinges with short straps. Stone wall approx. 50 m. long runs to north of right-hand angle of front facade. House connected with recusant Molyneux family, reported to have been used for Catholic worship (possible priest hole next to chimney breast). James II believed to have stayed at the house.
