Description
Numbers 221-233 with an attached verandah are four shops located on Lord Street in Southport, likely built between 1860 and 1890, with various later alterations. The building features a mix of partly coursed sandstone rubble with quoins and predominantly red brick with stone and some red terracotta dressings. It displays an eclectic architectural style with Italianate influences, consisting of four one-bay units arranged at right angles to the street.
The exterior is two storeys high, except for the fourth unit, which has a tall added third storey. On the ground floor, the third unit (numbers 229 and 231) features a canted wooden-framed shop window flanked by recessed entrances with panelling, while the other units have 20th-century shop fronts. The first floor of the first unit (numbers 221 and 223) is made of stone and includes a canted ashlar oriel with three round-headed lights, complete with moulded heads, imposts, and keystones, topped by an open pediment. This unit also has a gable with a small roundel. The remaining three units feature canted flat-roofed oriels with four round-headed lights and a cornice with modillions; the second unit has a pedimented gable, the third has a pitched roof, and the fourth unit (number 233) boasts a tall third storey with a truncated pyramidal roof, a raised gabled centre containing a 2-centred arch with a 2/2 sash and terracotta decoration in the tympanum, along with a run-out impost band, terracotta panels, and a panelled frieze. A tall side-wall chimney is located to the right of this unit.
The attached verandah consists of eight bays supported by cast-iron columns featuring foliated pedestals, debased crocket caps, and scrolled foliated brackets supporting the fascia beam, all covered by a single-pitched glazed roof.
This building forms a group with Numbers 215-219 to the left and Numbers 235-241 to the right, and the verandah contributes to the distinctive character of this street.
