Description
The Nelson Monument is a Grade II* listed structure built in 1813 by M. Cotes Wyatt, with contributions from Westmacott. This stone and bronze monument stands on a granite base and features a circular design. It is inscribed with the phrase "ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY," which is repeated around the monument. Surrounding a circular drum are four chained prisoners, each depicted in relief panels adorned with festoons. Atop the monument is a bronze group representing the apotheosis of the deceased Admiral Nelson. The base of the monument includes iron ventilator grilles that serve a warehouse located beneath the square, which is now a car park. This monument is noted as the earliest public monument in Liverpool.
