Description
The Church of St Mary, built between 1853 and 1854 by architect A.H. Holme, is a Grade II listed church located on St. Mary's Road. It is constructed of stone and features a hexagonal slate roof. The church comprises a nave, chancel, transepts, and a vestry situated to the southeast. The nave is adorned with windows that have two lights, along with a three-light west window flanked by recessed two-light windows, all showcasing geometrical tracery. The transepts are supported by diagonal buttresses and have three-light windows, with two-light windows on the returns.
The tower features angle buttresses and a north entrance with a single order, a hood mould with head stops, and a two-light window above. There is also a roundel with a crocketed ogival hood, possibly intended for a clock. The tower is topped with two-light bell openings, a broach spire with swept broaches, and two tiers of lucarnes, along with a weathercock. The canted chancel has a series of windows arranged in a 2:3:2-light configuration.
Inside, the church boasts a scissor-brace roof made of laminated timbers, with flying arches over the crossing. To the left of the chancel arch, there is a pulpit that features an entrance in the wall with an ogival hood. The church also contains interesting 19th-century stained glass.
